ZOSTAVAX

Herpes zoster, commonly known as Shingles, is caused by reactivation of the Varicella or Chicken Pox virus in the body. It is a disease characterised by a blistering rash and other symptoms such as severe pain. The incidence and severity of Shingles and its complications increases markedly with age. ZOSTAVAX is a single dose vaccine recommended for adults 60 years and over to prevent Shingles. This vaccine is not currently available at Pier Street Medical Centre, however, if you are interested, please speak to your GP and a script will be provided. The approximate cost of the Vaccine is $225.00

Zostavax will become available under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) on 1st of November 2016. Patients aged between 70 and 79 years of age will be eligible to get this immunisation for free under the NIP scheme.
